Therapy for the Bay Area

Couples, individual, family and addiction work with Daniel A. Linder, MFT — online throughout the San Francisco Bay Area.

In short: Daniel A. Linder, MFT is a California Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (License LMFT 17435) with more than forty years of experience. He works with Bay Area clients by Zoom — San Francisco, San Jose, Oakland, Berkeley, the Peninsula and Marin. Sessions run 45 minutes: $300 individual, $350 couples and family, $350 addiction treatment, $400 intervention. The first 15-minute consultation is free.

The Bay Area produces a particular kind of relational strain. People here are, as a rule, competent — good at solving problems, good at optimizing, good at managing. Those same instincts tend to work badly inside an intimate relationship, where the goal is not to solve the other person but to be genuinely present with them.

Couples often arrive describing their relationship the way they would describe an underperforming system: we have tried the apps, we scheduled date nights, we read the books, and nothing moved. Usually nothing moved because the problem was never a process problem.

Overwork, achievement, and quiet isolation

A long career here can be genuinely absorbing in a way that crowds out everything else, and it is socially rewarded the entire time. People do not notice the drift until a partner names it, or until it is quite late. The same pattern shows up around substances and compulsive behavior — high function on the outside, something increasingly managed on the inside.

Remote and hybrid work has made this harder rather than easier for many couples. Two people in the same apartment all day is not the same as two people in contact with each other.

Who this is for

  • Couples in San Francisco, San Jose, Oakland, Berkeley, the Peninsula or Marin who have stopped talking about what actually matters
  • High-functioning people managing something privately — drinking, porn, work, stimulants — that has not yet produced a visible crisis
  • Partners of people in that position
  • Individuals who have done therapy before, found it pleasant, and found that nothing changed
  • Couples navigating the strain of long hours, relocation, or two demanding careers

How this works from a distance

All Bay Area work is by Zoom. California licensure is statewide, so what matters is that you are physically in California during the session — not how far you are from the therapist. For relational work the medium matters far less than consistency, and not having to cross a bridge at 6pm helps consistency considerably.

The approach is inside-out: you transform your relationships by transforming the relationship with your Self. One theme runs underneath it — differences are not the enemy of intimacy. They are the passageway to it. For addiction, the frame is The Relationship Model of Addiction™, which treats addiction as a relationship with a means of relief rather than as a disease.

Common questions

Can you see Bay Area clients if you are based in Southern California?

Yes. California licensure is statewide rather than city-by-city. What matters legally is that you are physically located in California during the session.

Is this in person or online?

Bay Area work is online by Zoom. In-person sessions are available only in Fallbrook, in San Diego County.

Is online couples therapy effective?

For relational work, generally yes. The substance of couples therapy is conversation, which transfers well to video. The larger risk to outcomes is inconsistent attendance, which telehealth tends to improve.

What does therapy cost?

Individual therapy is $300 per 45-minute session. Couples and family therapy are $350. Addiction treatment is $350; intervention is $400. A 15-minute consultation is free.
