Our courses are designed primarily for professionals looking for fresh, new perspectives on Addictions, Recovery and Relationships. You will be able to keep course materials to use as a reference or guide whenever the need arises.

Online self-study enables you to learn at your own pace in your own time in your own way -- no full day or two at a workshop; no travel, parking or childcare.

The Board of Behavioral Sciences has ruled that effective February 1, 2003, all 36 California CEU's required for continued licensure can be gotten through online courses.

Be sure to check with your particular licensing board to confirm that all requirements are met.

The Relational Model of Addiction - (6 CEU’s)

“An inherent limitation of a strictly medical model approach is ignoring the fact that ‘pathological dependence’ implies that a relationship, one that is emotional and psychological in nature, has formed with the substance or activity (i.e. gambling, porn, etc.) The ‘pathological dependency’ is a pathological relationship, one in which there is a beginning, progressive emotional involvement and a synergistic interplay between dependence and denial.”

The Relational Model of Addiction accounts for pre-disposing conditions and etiology; applies across addictions including drug addiction and alcoholism, porn, sex, and love addictions and compulsive gambling; and has profound treatment implications for those in recovery.

Relational Recovery Training - (8 CEU’s)

“No (intimate) relationships during the first year of sobriety.”

Makes sense. Stabilize first, before getting involved in a new relationship. But what next?
How does the recovering addict gain the necessary skills? Where does he or she go for guidance?”

This course focuses on basic relationship-building principles, pitfalls, distinctions and skills that will empower the recovering addict, or anyone else for that matter, to transform the quality of his or her relationships.

Ideally suited for health professionals, this course will enhance practitioners’ effectiveness when making interventions and educating clients on all relationship related matters.

Diagnosing Addiction - (2 CEU’s)

Diagnosing Addiction presents a fresh, new approach for doing assessments to determine whether an addiction exists and the diagnosis of addiction is in order, which makes early stage intervention possible. We're stepping off the plateau of the disease concept by utilizing 'subjective' criteria, i.e. manifestations of denial, to make a 'subjective' diagnosis. From the Relationship Model of Addiction perspective, the dynamics of addiction center on the interplay of dependence and denial, and that they exist hand in hand -- where ever there is dependence, there is denial’ and where there is denial, there is dependency. Manifestations of denial, subjective in nature, may be the gateway to diagnosis, challenging the prevailing adherence to a Medical Model orientation that deems only objective criteria real and valid.

A transcript of a session with a marijuana addicted patient is taken apart. Various types of manifestations of denial are identified and how to interpret them are discussed.

Mastering Intervention - (2 CEU’s)

An intervention is a carefully orchestrated, step-by-step process that begins at the point of initial contact from a family member. The counselor can then proceed to set up and guide the family through the stages of Psycho-education, Recollection, Rehearsal and Action Planning and culminating with Implementation-- when they address the addict directly and need for treatment.

Be ready for that initial contact from a significant other, which could happen anytime and happens frequently.

Add an essential tool to your array of services. Expect to be able to effectively conduct an intervention upon completion of this training.

Stigma, The Game of Appearances - (3 CEU’s)

Stigma revisits how stigma still, despite the disease concept, dictates how we behave in a variety of situations. We will discuss stigma as a weapon that punishes any deviation from the established standards of desirability that makes us want to misrepresent ourselves and hide our problems.

Professionals who have either lost sight of, or underestimate the multitude of overpowering, far-reaching, shame inducing effects of stigma are at risk of counter-transference issues that can undermine treatment. We know that clinicians are human beings, not impervious to social conditioning.

Advanced Clinical Training: Getting on Managed Care EAP/PPO Provider Panels - Fran Wickner (2 CEU's)

Getting on insurance company provider lists is a way for therapists in private practice to keep their caseload full. After this on-line training you will be able to:

  • Write an effective managed care cover letter and resume.
  • Have methods to follow-up on "closed" panels.
  • Know how to fill out a provider application.

Often therapists will think that all panels are closed or it is too late to get involved with behavioral healthcare, but this is not the case. Insurance companies are continually acquiring new business and adding new services, and new clinicians are needed.

Build/Expand your Private Practice: How to Increase Referrals and Have a Thriving Private Practice (2 CEU's)

Graduate school never taught us to be business managers. Many therapists actually went into the profession so they wouldn’t have to be in the business world. The word “marketing” often brings up connotations of unprofessional and unethical business practices. But this is not the case. You can market and be ethical about it. And the reality is, to have a thriving practice you have to learn to market.

This workshop will give you practical hints on how to start or expand your private practice and the resources to make it happen. It will show you how to continually bring in new clients so that your practice stays full. Rather than go into depth on any one area of marketing, you will get dozens of ideas and ways to start increasing referrals now.
